Natural Fibres for a Superfabric

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT OUR SUPERFABRICS?

Are you aware of a completely natural, Internationally Certified Organic fabric that:

1. Keeps little bodies cool in summer and warm in winter?

2. Offers Naturally High UV protection?

3. Is Super tough yet soft and gentle to the touch?

4. Is naturally dirt resistant and dries fast?

5. Is totally biodegradable, renewable and safe for the environment

If you said merino, Congratulations you are half way there. Merino by itself is an amazing fibre but it really becomes a Superfabric when blended with Silk.

Both Merino wool and silk have amazing proven benefits for young children, so what could be better for your child than having both in one piece of clothing?

Silk and wool clothing are extremely beneficial to children suffering from:

  • Asthma
  • Skin Allergies
  • Eczema
  • Chills
  • Coughs and colds
  • Dust  Allergies
  • Nappy Rash

Wool

Studies have proven that babies who wore wool next to their skin gained weight faster and had a reduced rate of SIDS compared with those who didn’t.

Insulating

Wool keeps you warm when you’re cool and cool when you’re hot! This is because Merino wool fabric has superior insulation qualities compared with most other fabrics (both synthetic and natural). It is the air trapped between the fibres, and not the fibres themselves that keeps the interior temperature stable – imagine a thermos flask. Your child will maintain a constant, safe and comfortable body temperature when wearing superfine Merino wool.

Absorbent

Merino wool wicks moisture away from the body. Bedouin tribes living in desert environments have been keeping cool in wool clothing for centuries. It can absorb an astounding 35% of its own dry weight in water, meaning that even if the weather is hot and humid your child’s skin will stay dry and not be clammy or sticky (essential for a good night’s sleep).

Natural Sunscreen

Wool has very high UV protection. It rates on average a protection factor of 30; far superior to cotton, bamboo or synthetics. Wool is perfect for outdoor summer wear.

Self-cleaning

Wool does not need washing every time it’s worn. Its antistatic qualities mean dirt and dust do not stick to it. it also stays clean due to its water resistant nature, as stains and spills are repelled. You can freshen the garment by turning it inside out and hanging it up to air in the shade or over the cot for a few hours.  If you would like to wash your garment see the FAQ about cleaning for a simple method of washing.

Fire Resistant

Merino wool contains natural fire retardants. It self-extinguishes (even in air) and will not burn.

Soft and gentle against delicate skin

You can be assured that all garments offered by Sweet Little Souls are superfine and super soft. The very finest (smallest diameter) Merino fibres and softest silks are used to make our clothing.  Your child will be wrapped in softness and feel comforted all year round.

A Renewable Resource

All those eco children out there will be pleased to know that the wool shorn from a sheep to make their clothing will grow back, and there will be another batch of wool clothing ready for them next year.

Silk

Insulating

Silk does not conduct heat, and acts as an excellent insulator to keep the body warm in the cold weather and cool in the hot weather. Silk is breathable, naturally hypoallergenic, absorbs moisture and reduces humidity.

Hypoallergenic

Silk is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites. If your child suffers from asthma and allergies then wearing silk blend clothing may help with reducing incidence of attacks.

Healing

Silk contains many amino acids in common with the human body, promoting healing. Minimally processed silk retains a proportion of Sericin (silk gum), which helps soothe skin irritations such as eczema. Silk really is the next best thing to have against your Sweet Little Soul’s skin (the first is, of course, mum!).

Durable

Silk fibres are very fine – about 10 nanometres (1/2500th of an inch) in diameter and have durable and resilient qualities. Strong as steel in tensile strength, silk is the strongest natural fibre known to humans. A single silk fibre has a tensile strength equal to steel wire of the same diameter! If you follow our fabric washing instructions, you should be able to keep silk garments in perfect condition for many years.

Hemp

The hemp fibre is porous, which means that it breathes very well and feels wonderfully cool in the summer. Still, it is considered to be about ten times stronger than cotton, and thus tends to be much more durable in use. Hemp clothing softens perfectly in use, so these garments quickly become favourites we don’t want to take off at all.
The hemp crop doesn’t need herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or even fertilizers to grow, so it is cultivation is environmentally friendly and the clothing naturally safe to use.
